Rwandan officials assessing damage from latest heavy rains

Rwandan officials are wading into damage assessments after heavy rain early last week left hundreds homeless in several parts of southeast and Northern Rwanda, an official source confirmed Monday in Kigali.
According to a statement issued Monday by the ministry of Local government and Social Affairs in Kigali, heavy rains continued to pound Rwanda's Eastern and Northern provinces.

Weather predictions indicate that more torrential downpours are expected across the country between September and December this year and Rwandan officials have urged communities living in remote rural zones to fight against erosion.

"Following heavy rains, floods and landslides destroying lives  across the country, we urge the public to remain vigilant and be prepared," the statement said.

In the meanwhile, the Rwandan ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees has said it is currently working on a project that will ensure the safety of every member of the community in case of an emergency across the country.

The launching of this project comes after a downpour hit a large part of southeast Rwandan district of Ngoma last week and left at least 221 families homeless, and their crops destroyed.

Heavy rains are expected to continue in the same region, the weather agency said, urging residents in affected areas to stay vigilant for possible flooding and mudslides.
