Rwanda Met. Dept. warns of torrential rains

KIGALI: Rwanda Meteorological Department on Friday warned of heavy rains across the country. It said areas especially to be affected are the two mountainous districts of Musanze in the north and Rubavu in the north west.

The Director General of Rwanda Meteorological Department, John Ntaganda Semafara, explained that there have been downpours across the country since the end of last month.

Climate experts explained that despite this variability of seasonal precipitation in Rwanda chances that the phenomenon of El Nino would result in a flood situation are limited.

The downpours are expected to continue until Sunday.

In September last year, natural disasters wreaked havoc in Rwanda killing 5 people, destroying about 1,000 houses and 892 hectares of crops, according to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees Affairs.

Roads, bridges and water supply lines were  damaged while livestock was also lost.
