Rwanda's Met. department set to improve weather forecasting accuracy

A new weather forecasting model, developed by Rwandan meteorologists and their partners, purports to improve the quality of the climate and weather data provided to citizens and make it available to as many people as possible, PANA reports in Kigali.

According to a statement, issued by the Rwanda Meteorology Agency, the new approach aims especially at helping to boost Agriculture sector which is considered as the primary one using meteorological information.

"This requires [actors] to be equipped with knowledge of the start and end of rainfall seasons, daily rainfall as well as temperature and humidity ranges for harvest storage and other purposes," the statement said.

Among some other equipment that have been purchased by Rwanda to provide accurate weather forecast to different end users, are some 141 automatic rainfall and weather stations and the installation of a sophisticated C-band weather radar system that can be user to detect natural hazards triggered by heavy rains, storms and other high-impact phenomena, it said.

Commenting on this achievement, the Director General of the Rwanda Meteorological Agency, John Ntaganda Semafara, noted that weather and climate information is still vital to many stakeholders and is instrumental to the green development we desire in this era of changes to our climate.

"The work we do is essential to all sectors of the economy because it supports safe and efficient development," Semafara said.

In the meanshile, meteorologists stress the need  to improve the safety of life and property, support Rwanda’s socio-economic and sustainable development through providing accurate weather information, the new model being developed is set to help researchers detect signs of the upcoming heavy rains and other related natural disasters

There is a need to provide world class climate information that will be of use to researchers, planners and decision makers, the statement said.
